The phrase Happy Holidays means different things to people around the world. To many across Australia, it means Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
This meaningful phrase is said to friends, neighbours, colleagues, strangers, businesspeople and family and is often used starting around the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States all the way through Hanukkah (Dec. 20-28), Christmas (Dec. 25), New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan. 1) and even sometimes on into Chinese New Year in February. Whatever you celebrate, the best of the holiday season to you and your family.
No matter how we say it, it holds so much meaning. We wish everyone to enjoy the season with family and friends; open presents; visit or be visited by Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle (among other names); share good food and gifts while enjoying the comfort of companionship.
Many take the time to reflect on the happenings in 2011 – both the good and the bad – and look forward with anticipation to what 2012 will bring.
It’s also a time to follow traditions – both Christian and non-Christain.
