Software upgrades are a fact of life in the technology era. But if you are still using Microsoft Office 2007, don’t worry. You have six more months to take advantage of free support. After that, it’s going to cost you.
According to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle chart, free support for Microsoft Office 2007 is scheduled to conclude 12 months after the release of Service Pack 3 or October 2012. The extended support, which you will have to pay for, is scheduled to begin Oct. 9, 2012, according to Mary Jo Foley in her article for ZDNet. The extended support ends Oct. 10, 2017.
This extension of free support is good news for those who are reluctant to switch to Microsoft Office 2010, though Microsoft is, of course, encouraging people to make the switch soon, at the very least, before the six month grace period ends. The extension applies to all of the Office 2007 products, i.e. Basic, Home and Student, Standard, Professional, Professional Plus and Ultimate 2007.
If it’s more cost effective for you to hang on to Office 2007 after the free support ends, then I guess there’s no rush. If it isn’t, it might not be a good idea for you to drag your feet any longer.
