The new Microsoft Outlook Web App is available for free from the App Store in iTunes, however, an Office 365 Subscription that includes Exchange Online is required to use it. The native Outlook Web App clients are built for Apple’s iPhone and iPad, and as of July 16th, both can be installed directly from iTunes.

Outlook Web App (OWA) provides email, calendar, and contact functionality, working in the same way that Outlook Web App in the browser does. Microsoft introduced OWA for iPhone and iPad to support many of their customers who currently use their iPhones and iPads for work-related tasks.

According to Microsoft’s recent blog post regarding Office 365, the native versions provide “additional capabilities that are only possible through native integration of the app with mobile devices.”

Another recent blog post from Microsoft explained that the Windows Phone 8 would include a high-quality native email client in Outlook Mobile, as well as offering Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), which is the industry standard for accessing Exchange email on mobile devices.

The OWA apps are available in the same 60 languages supported by Exchange Online for Outlook Web App in the browser, explained Microsoft. Last month, Microsoft also introduced an Office Mobile for iPhone Suite, which requires an Office 365 subscription as well.

For iPhone, download the Outlook Web App here. For iPad, download here.

The following Office 365 plans will support the Outlook Web App:

  • Office 365 Small Business
  • Office 365 Small Business Premium
  • Office 365 Midsize Business
  • Office 365 Enterprise E1, E3 and E4
  • Office 365 Kiosk K1 and K2
  • Office 365 Education A2, A3 and A4
  • Any Exchange Offline Plan

In addition, some government plans will also include OWA for iPhone and iPad. However, in order to use the new apps, users must be running iPhone 4 or higher, and iPad 2 or higher (both of which run iOS 6 or higher).
