Microsoft has recently rolled out the public preview version of Office 2013. This is the latest version of Microsoft Office, and will be highly focused on cloud services. A major part of the experience is Exchange Server 2013. This has been available to some testers for quite some time, but is now available to the public. With this public beta release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, some of the features that are available include:
- Offline support for Outlook Web App – This means all actions sync automatically each time there is an available internet connection.
- Site Mailboxes – This allows access to Exchange email and SharePoint documents from one location
- Three UI Layouts – These work with standard computers, tablets and smart phones.
- Customizable Apps for Outlook – Apps are available from the marketplace both by Microsoft and trusted partners.
- Exchange Management Console – Tthis now becomes the web-based Exchange Administrative Center.
- Support for up to 8 TB – Eight terabytes of data and multiple databases via the Data Ability Group.
- Built in malware protection – This can be used, turned off or used in conjunction with premium malware services.
- Data Loss Prevention – This includes capabilities that help identify and protect sensitive data.
- In-Place eDiscovery – This function can now run from Exchange, Lync and SharePoint using only one interface.
- Only Two Roles – This makes for ease of use as there is now simply a Client Access Server and Mailbox Server. All data is rendered in the Mailbox Server, while the CAS is more useful as a way access the behind the scenes information.
- Fast Search – An integrated search and indexing program that works across all Microsoft servers.
This newest version of Microsoft Exchange Server is considered to be an evolution of the 2010 version. Exchange Server expert Van Horenbeeck wrote”To me, Exchange Server 2013 feels like a natural evolution of its predecessor Exchange Server 2010: there are no groundbreaking features, at least none that you couldn’t expect.” Considering the success and workability of the 2010 Microsoft Exchange Server, this is not necessarily a bad thing.
